The story goes:
Built in 1926, as the "Bureau of Information," it was the "World's Largest Bureau."Â It was a 32 feet tall furniture showroom inside of a building resembling a waist-high set of drawers. It was painted white with floral accents and had an attached vertical mirror.
In 1996 it was remodeled into the current 38 feet tall 18th century Goddard-Townsend block-and-shell (according to Roadside America) or a 19th-century Queen Anne-style chest of drawers (according to Atlas Obscura). No matter the era it represents, a pair of mismatched 6 feet tall socks was added to recognize the hosiery industry in High Point.
